Project Completion – Block 5, Northern Cross, Dublin 17

We are delighted to see the completion of Block 5 at Northern Cross, Malahide Road, Dublin 17, a landmark 12-storey development by Montane Developments and another significant step in the continued completion of the Northern Cross Quarter.
Barrett Mahony Consulting Engineers provided the full suite of civil, structural and traffic engineering consultancy services from planning through detailed design and construction to completion.

The development occupies a prominent site fronting the Malahide Road and forms an important architectural book-end to the Northern Cross development. The building rises from 8 to 12 storeys above basement level and incorporates residential accommodation together with ground-floor commercial space.
From a structural engineering perspective, the project incorporated:
• An in-situ reinforced concrete structural frame rising to 12 storeys.
• Jump-formed reinforced concrete cores, providing an efficient solution for the construction of the building’s principal vertical stability elements.
• The use of two-storey-high precast columns, coordinated with the in-situ frame to improve construction efficiency and programme.
• A reinforced concrete basement and substructure, requiring careful coordination with the superstructure and surrounding site constraints.
• Detailed coordination of the structural frame with the architectural and building-services requirements throughout construction.
Our civil and traffic engineering input included the coordination of the development’s site infrastructure, drainage, access and transport requirements within the established Northern Cross urban environment.
